Pomegranate: the purple super fruit

This dark red powerhouse is not only delicious in taste and extremely healthy – it is also a true power fruit extract for natural skincare. The pomegranate can be found in supermarkets between September and December and is rich in vitamins and antioxidants. From its seeds, a high-quality extract can be obtained, which can unfold on our skin its anti-inflammatory and cell-regenerating effect. No wonder, then, that this extremely versatile fruit is also called paradise apple.

The popular exotic fruit usually grows on quite small trees or shrubs. Although the pomegranate tree can reach a height of five meters and a trunk diameter of three meters, it takes many centuries for the plant to grow to these measures. Incidentally, in the world of botany, the pomegranate is called Punica granatum. The Latin name contains the words punicus (punic) and granatum (kernel, grain). Punicus refers to the Roman name for the Phoenicians, who have probably brought the ancient Romans this pungent, bright red fruit.

Since ancient times, the pomegranate tree has been cultivated in western and central Asia and today also in the Mediterranean region. In contrast, cultivation in Germany is much more difficult. In the open air, it should not be planted at all because of winter frost. During its heyday in spring and summer, the fruit tree shows its most beautiful side: then it is beautifully decorated with large bell-shaped flowers, which initially shine in a bright yellow and later in a rich orange. Only when the flowers turn dark you can gradually discover the first pomegranates on the tree. They grow directly on the decaying flowers, are initially colored green and take on an orange and then a deep red color in the course of fruit ripeness. Only then can the pomegranate be harvested, as it does not ripen. But to find the actual treasure of the pomegranate, you have to take a closer look inside.

A fully matured pomegranate contains up to 400 small pomegranate seeds in its fruit chambers. In traditional Chinese medicine, the sweet-sour taste and the positive effect of the bright red-colored seeds has been around since the 3rd century BC. Basically, the pomegranate in China is a symbol of abundance and fertility. In addition, in TCM it is assigned to the Earth transformation phase and described as a warming food. At the organic level, this phase focuses primarily on digestion and metabolism – and pomegranate seeds can serve well here. They moisturize, provide digestive fiber and promote blood circulation.

The ability of moistening makes the pomegranate seeds also very applicable for body care – therefore the extract of the seeds is also an important part of the Ashéra Yin Yang Balance 24-Hours Facial Creme. Its moisturizing properties provide the skin with intensive care and keep it from drying out on regular use. In addition, the high-quality extract supports the elastin and collagen production of the skin. With the application, however, we not only pamper the skin, but also the nose – the pomegranate extract gives the cream a pleasantly nutty fragrance. You notice: the pomegranate is a real all-rounder!
