It has been playing an important role in traditional Chinese medicine for about 5,000 years – the ginseng root belonging to the TCM substance group Qi Tonics (Ginseng Radix) is a strengthening and invigorating medicinal plant that promotes the Qi circulation and the formation of body juices. The ginseng plant is particularly abundant in mountainous and forestous regions of Korea and China and is harvested only after six to seven years to fully develop its efficacy. Since the root grows annually by only about one centimeter and the breeding of the plant is extremely demanding, it is very valuable. It is no coincidence that ginseng is considered “green gold” – in 19th century China, the value of the marvelous root could even compete with that of gold and silver.
As a cosmetic effect of ginseng root (Chinese Renshen), the increase in microcirculation in small vessels and the resulting improvement in the oxygen supply in the skin cells are seen. The root has a revitalizing effect, it strengthens and protects the epidermis, improves the resistance to harmful environmental influences and promotes cell regeneration. The contained polysaccharides (sugar molecules) form a fluid-binding gel mass in the skin and thus increase the content of skin moisture. This in turn causes an increased elasticity of the skin.
As a special feature of the active ingredients ginsenosides are considered, which stimulate the skin’s own hyaluron production. The root promotes collagen regeneration and also has an antioxidant effect. The main component ginsenosides are complex mixtures of triterpene saponins.
Together with red-salted sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza Radix), the ginseng root promotes microcirculation. In combination with asparagus root (Astragalus Radix) it supports the natural defense mechanism and protects the skin from environmental influences.
